TSA Screens Record Number of Passengers Since March 2020
In an exciting sign of the travel industry’s recovery, the Transportation and Security Administration (TSA) reported screening 1.36 million passengers on Friday, March 12, the most passengers they’ve screened in one day since March 15, 2020. On the same day last year, TSA screened 1.79 million passengers, so though 2021’s number is still down 24%, it’s still a promising sign.
Since hitting a low of 468,933 passengers on Jan. 26 of this year, TSA is seeing a slow but steady increase as the year goes on. Spring break travel and an increased vaccine rollout are two reasons why TSA is anticipating a big return to travel and are seeking to hire more than 6,000 airport security screening officers by summer 2021.
In October 2020, TSA screened 1 million passengers for the first time in one day, marking their first milestone in the return of travel.
