Travel Agents Know Mexico Best: 10 Top Travel Tips

Who knows more about traveling to Mexico than travel agents? Over the years, we’ve collected travel tips from agents, and now we’ve compiled 10 of our favorite ones for three of Mexico’s most popular tourism destinations. Because when you need something, it’s always best to go to the pros!

Cancun

  1. Use the transportation included in the package. Don't worry about renting a car as the resort can set up excursions that are worry-free.

  2. Go swimming in a cenote. It's a very cool experience and one unique to the Yucatan Peninsula.
Rachelle S., Wanderlove Travel in South Carolina
  3. Even if you are staying at an all-inclusive, go into town for a day and experience the vibe. Take the bus and get into the culture.
Janet W., Travel Advisors in Iowa
  4. Appreciate the history and the culture with a trip to Tulum to see the Mayan ruins or to the UNESCO larger site of Chichen Itza.

Riviera Maya

  1. I recommend a reef adventure! Go sailing on a catamaran to visit a coral reef and enjoy an incredible snorkeling experience! The fish are beautiful and there are so many different varieties – it's like swimming in a real life aquarium!
Sue L., Bursch Travel in Minnesota
  2. Take time to visit outside the resorts to get a feel for the town. You may also get some good buys off the resort campus. The resort fiesta is a lot of fun for all ages that anyone can enjoy even if you are not into water sports or boating. They also have great vendors.
Leslie P., Decadent Travels in Virginia
  3. A trip to the Riviera Maya can't be complete without a visit to 1,500-year-old Nohoch Mul, the Yucatán's tallest pyramid. Also, pay a visit to Chichen Itza, which was a large pre-Columbian city built by the Maya Civilization.
Jemeka B., T&J Travel in North Carolina

Puerto Vallarta

  1. Don't miss going into the city itself. It is gorgeous with the boardwalk along the ocean and the cobblestone streets. The old church is beautiful and not to be missed.
Lynette C. The Travel Connection Group in Missouri
  2. It's such a unique town and so different from the Cancun area. The mountains are beautiful and the city has such a great vibe to it. The people are very friendly and it has a very welcoming feeling for families and the LGBTQ community as well.
Lynette C., The Travel Connection Group in Missouri
  3. Take time to walk around downtown and eat at a variety of restaurants. Have breakfast at a beachfront restaurant; the food is excellent and fairly inexpensive. If you are staying at a place with a kitchen, don't be afraid to shop at the local downtown produce and meat market. The selection is great and the produce is fresh as is the meat!
Annica H., GoldRush Getaways in California
