Things To Do During a Cruise Stop in Progreso, Mexico

Emerging as one of the newer ports for large cruise ships to visit, Progreso, Mexico welcomes travelers in with a warm embrace. If you’re looking at shorter cruises departing from Galveston or New Orleans, there’s a good chance this destination will be on the itinerary. Upon arrival, the first thing you might notice is the length of the pier. At approximately four miles long, it’s known as the longest pier in the world. No need to worry, though, as there are shuttles available to transport guests to and from the ship.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest ship, Norwegian Prima, recently visited Progreso during its inaugural sailing out of Galveston, and the cruise line offered a handful of excursions to choose from. While it’s sometimes fun to enjoy all a cruise ship has to offer while other guests are in port, this is not the place to do so. Progreso has so much to offer, and you won’t regret disembarking to get a glimpse of it.

Explore Mayan Ruins

If Chichen Itza is on your bucket list, a visit to Progreso can help you check it off. This well-known archaeological site is available as an excursion through several different tour companies. Keep in mind Chichen Itza is about two hours from the pier, so it’s an all-day excursion. Getting to see one of the New 7 Wonders of the World is well worth the distance though. Another archeological site easily accessible from the Progreso cruise port is Mayapan. These ruins see fewer visitors, making it a quieter experience.

Head To Mérida

Visiting the capital city of Yucatán, Mérida, is another way to spend a day off the ship. The city is about a 45-minute drive from Progreso, and there is plenty to do here. Travelers can stroll through local markets while tasting all the delicious produce, gaze at the stunning architecture or pop inside a museum to learn about the history of the destination. It’s the ideal place for those looking to see an authentic side of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Take a Dip in a Cenote

Experiencing a cenote is nothing short of amazing, and this activity is available during a stop in Progreso. Whether it’s the star of the show or part of a larger excursion, taking a dip in a cenote is sure to be a memorable experience. Those looking to fully relax might choose to spend the day at Cenotes Hacienda Mucuyche. The route begins with a guided tour through an 18th-century hacienda followed by a swim through both cenotes, named Carlota and Azul Maya. The two cenotes are connected by a lush canal that visitors can swim or walk through. Afterwards, guests can enjoy a relaxing lunch, swim in the pool and visit the gift shop.

Relax on the Beach

Getting off a cruise ship doesn’t always mean you have to be whisked away in a tour bus with an action-packed day on the agenda. Some people just want relaxation – and in Progreso, this means spending a day at the beach. Visitors can choose to walk the Malecon, stepping inside shops and restaurants as they please, or simply pack a good book and soak up the sun while lounging on the sand.
