Iberostar Selection Playa Mita Becomes the First Beach Vacation Resort Hotel in Latin America with LEED O+M Certification

The Iberostar Group announces that, after a long and demanding evaluation process, its Iberostar Selection Playa Mita hotel, in Riviera Nayarit (Mexico), has become the first beach resort in Latin America with LEED certification, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, awarded by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). This 5-star vacation resort was awarded the certification in the GOLD category, with a rating of 71 points, endorsing and recognizing all the interior and exterior spaces that together make up this luxury resort that operates in a sustainable manner and respects the environment.

“At Iberostar Group we continue to advance towards sustainable tourism from design and construction to the sustainable operations of our complexes. Through these actions, we work towards our goal of promoting a business model that allows us to offer responsible tourism experiences while meeting the highest standards in the experience we offer our customers," says Fernando García, Chief Resources Officer of Iberostar Group.

The certifier highlighted the excellent energy performance of the complex thanks to its innovative facilities, designed with the highest standards in energy efficiency. The hotel also has an interior design based on finishes and furniture made of high-quality materials, a landscaping project that includes native species and a central lake that is fed by collected rainwater and water recovered from other processes, which feeds the complex's irrigation network, thus reducing the hotel's water consumption.

Other aspects valued by the LEED Certification that minimize environmental impacts and guarantee the health and well-being of guests and staff are the policies for replacing bathroom furniture and minimizing waste generation; the good quality of the air in the hotel spaces, which comply with the strict ASHRAE 62.1-2016 standard and the BMS (Building Management Systems) system, which guarantees the efficient management of the building and its facilities, achieving a balance between customer comfort and the responsible use of energy resources.
