Hawaii Eases Safe Travels Program Entry Requirements

In early January, the state of Hawaii announced a few changes to its Safe Travels Program. These changes ease the state’s entry requirements put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic by shortening the mandatory quarantine period and eliminating the completion of the health questionnaire.

Changes to the Mandatory Quarantine Period

Travelers to Hawaii can expect three main changes to the state’s mandatory quarantine period.

  1. Starting January 3, the Safe Travels Mandatory Quarantine period will be reduced from 10 days to five days.
    • For travelers who are currently on 10-day quarantine, if they've hit their five-day "mark" on January 3 or later, they will be released from quarantine after the fifth day. For example, if January 3 is their fifth day, they will be released from quarantine on January 4.
  2. Travelers who arrive without a pre-travel test result or aren't fully vaccinated must quarantine for five days.
    • Day one is counted from day of arrival. For example, a traveler arriving on January 3 will quarantine through January 7 and be released on January 8.
    • This affects only domestic travel from the U.S. and its territories. Direct international travelers fall under Federal CDC guidelines.
  3. The isolation and quarantine policy for COVID-19-positive travelers, regardless of vaccination status, has been revised.
    • If COVID-19 positive regardless of vaccination status, a traveler must:
      - Isolate for at least five days and until symptoms are gone.
      - Continue to wear a mask for five days after isolation.

Change to the Health Questionnaire Requirement

Travelers will no longer be required to complete the Safe Travels Program health questionnaire, as of Jan. 4, 2022.

Travelers to Hawaii will still be subject to temperature screening at all Hawaii airports upon arrival. And, just a reminder that travelers arriving from the U.S. or its territories who are fully vaccinated may enter Hawaii without pre-travel testing and quarantine starting the 14th day after the completion of their vaccination.
