Cruising Off-the-Beaten-Path
Sure, travelers are guaranteed to have a great time hopping on a boat with the destination set for a sunny beach somewhere along the shores of Mexico. But sometimes the only way to fulfill one’s wanderlust is with something a little more unique, something off-the-beaten-path. These destinations might not be the first thing travelers think of when they hear the word “cruise” but they should be. Here are of the most notable lesser-known destinations accessible by ship around the world.
Egypt
Once reserved for queens and pharaohs, travelers can live like royalty as they explore the wonders of Egypt via cruise. A variety of cruise lines such as Uniworld and Azamara offer multi-day trips down the Nile River where travelers can marvel at the creations of civilizations past. The Valley of the Kings, Luxor, Temple of Edfu, Karnak Temple, and of course, the world-famous Pyramids of Giza are a few of the many notable sights cruisers can enjoy during their Nile River adventure.
Australia
Send travelers to the Land Down Under for a cruising adventure like none other. Australia is home to an abundance of cruise ports, the most popular of which are in the cities of Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne. After docking in their chosen city, travelers can enjoy the many sights unique to the area such as the Great Barrier Reef, wild kangaroos and koalas, beautiful national parks. They can also have a chance to interact with Aboriginal Australians, the oldest living civilization. The North Pole
Do you know of any travelers who just can’t get enough of winter and cold weather? After arriving in town, travelers can explore popular tourist destinations like Angkor Wat, Bayon Temple, Koh Ker and Banteay Srei. The town of Phnom Penh is also home to the Choeung Ek Genocidal Center where travelers can pay their respects to former political prisoners once kept by the Khmer Rouge. Peru
Most known for the awe-inspiring Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, Peru is another top destination accessible by cruise. There are a few ports of call in Peru, but visitors are likely to dock at the port of Callao due to its close proximity to Lima, the country’s capital. South Africa
