Sure, travelers are guaranteed to have a great time hopping on a boat with the destination set for a sunny beach somewhere along the shores of Mexico. But sometimes the only way to fulfill one’s wanderlust is with something a little more unique, something off-the-beaten-path. These destinations might not be the first thing travelers think of when they hear the word “cruise” but they should be. Here are of the most notable lesser-known destinations accessible by ship around the world.

Street markets, ancient temples and architectural sites, white-sand beaches and impressive mountains make Cambodia one of our favorite unexpected cruise destinations. Visitors will arrive at the Port of Sihanoukville, Cambodia’s only cruise port, where free shuttles are provided to the town center. After arriving in town, travelers can explore popular tourist destinations like Angkor Wat, Bayon Temple, Koh Ker and Banteay Srei. The town of Phnom Penh is also home to the Choeung Ek Genocidal Center where travelers can pay their respects to former political prisoners once kept by the Khmer Rouge. Travelers can book trips to Cambodia through a variety of cruise lines including Avalon Waterways and Viking River Cruises.

Peru

Most known for the awe-inspiring Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, Peru is another top destination accessible by cruise. There are a few ports of call in Peru, but visitors are likely to dock at the port of Callao due to its close proximity to Lima, the country’s capital. Popular attractions in-destination include the famous Nazca Lines, Lima city tours, the Temple of Pachacamac and the Museo Larco. Get your clients there with Celebrity Cruises or Princess Cruises.

South Africa

Breathtaking landscapes, exotic creatures and bustling cities, South Africa is a cruise destination that travelers won’t want to miss. Cape Town is the second largest metro area in South Africa and is home to one of the world’s most beautiful harbors. Passengers docking in Cape Town can explore the many local attractions such as Table Mountain, Victoria Falls, Cape Point Nature Reserve and Robben Island. South Africa is also famous for its wine tasting and winery tours making it a great destination for oenophiles (the fancy term for wine lovers) around the world. Travelers can book cruises to South Africa through Oceania Cruises, Virgin Holidays Cruises and more.
